Phospholipids are a class of lipids (fats) that are fundamental to the structure and function of cell membranes. They consist of a hydrophilic (water-attracting) head and two hydrophobic (water-repelling) tails. This unique structure allows them to form the lipid bilayer of cell membranes, creating a semi-permeable barrier that regulates the passage of nutrients and waste products in and out of cells.
Phospholipids play a pivotal role in synapses, the junctions between neurons where neurotransmitters are released and received. The cell membranes at synapses are rich in specific types of phospholipids that facilitate the rapid fusion of vesicles containing neurotransmitters, enabling efficient communication between neurons.
